The Toba Caldera Geopark area is a vast area. The lake itself is 100 km long and 30 km wide. It took us 1 week just to drive around it. But it was an incredible week!
Unique and active geology
Spectacular scenery
Great food
Learning about waste management systems in the area
Discussion with local business person about the beauty of the area and impacts of waste pollution
Learning about tourist attractions and how they work to keep them clean
Tourism and other economic activities increase, so are the waste issues.
Fortunately, I was able to connect with many concerned local residents, businesses, and government officials committed to protecting their communities from being trashed.
There is good reason to be hopeful that meaningful change can be made here, and be an example to the rest of Indonesia, and the world.
